FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- 1. How important is the issue of weight in selecting a mattress?
-
Very! At MacMed we are committed to matching the right mattress product to the client’s individual needs. Beware of the “one size fits all” claims of some mattress manufacturers. How can a frail elderly person achieve appropriate pressure relief on a mattress that is weight rated for a patient of 240 kilogrammes? Lighter weights require different configurations of foams. The clinically obese patient requires a “bariatric” solution to their pressure care needs.
- 2. Do I still have to reposition a patient if they are on a pressure redistribution mattress?
-
Absolutely yes! The three golden rules of relieving pressure are MOVE,MOVE, MOVE! The best thing you can do to relieve pressure is to change position frequently. In addition in high risk cases special additional equipment should be used such as cushions, heel wedges and even specialty linen and garments such as MacMed’s Parafricta range with zero shear and friction properties.
- 3. What are the unique infection control features of our pressure redistribution mattress?
-
The MacMed Mattress has high frequency welded seams to prevent the ingress of fluids as well as a unique waterfall flap over the zipper. The cover is impermeable to fluids. The interior mattress foams are also treated with an internationally renowned antimicrobial to prevent bacteria, mould, mildew and dust mites.
- 4. Can I order a mattress of any size?
-
Certainly, in addition to the range of ‘standard’ sizes (as seen below), MacMed are able to custom manufacture any of the products to any size and configuration:
Single Size: 188cm x 91cm
King Single: 203cm x 107cm
Long Single: 203cm x 91cm
Double: 188cm x 137cm
Queen: 203cm x 153cm
King: 203cm x 183cm
- 5. Are your mattresses waterproof?
-
Yes, every MacMed mattress is covered in an innovative fabric that is completely impermeable to fluids but is breathable for additional patient comfort and optimum skin integrity.
- 6. What is so special about your mattress covers?
-
MacMed mattress covers are made from a unique fabric called “MacTech” which has been meticulously designed to cope with the rigours of the healthcare environment while providing a soft two way stretch for low shear and friction.
- 7. What type of foams do you use?
-
MacMed only use the finest quality hospital grade foams suitable for all healthcare environments.
- 8. Is there any Latex in your products?
-
No. ALL MacMed products are certified latex free so they are not harmful to those clients who suffer from latex allergies, this is usually a mandatory requirement of hospitals and health networks
- 9. How do I know if a mattress is “bottoming out”?
-
The easiest way is to “profile” the patient in bed and observe the three layers of foam by uncovering a section of the mattress cover. The traditional “fist test” is subjective and unreliable and was not conceived with the multi layer mattress in mind. Mistakes often occur when the harder support layers of the base are compressed and by mistake it is considered “bottomed out” MacMed mattresses are scientifically configured to keep the patient in the upper layers at all times.
- 10. Do you make special products for applications like spinal injuries or mental health?
-
Yes. In fact, MacMed have some wonderful testimonials from spinal injury clients who have found comfort and the right support from one of our customized solutions such as the MACRO – the MacMed Mattress with the ROHO insert.
MacMed also supply many mental health facilities with occupational health and safety compliant equipment solutions.
